A steel mill may only offer steel products, but it may formulate different types of steel, and shape those different steel metals into different products, but at the core, it still is steel. A good example of a company putting the hedgehog concept into practice is Walgreen's, who divested themselves from the restaurant business and focused strictly on the ever-expanding pharmacy chain.
The restaurants were not essential to the future success of the company, whereas the pharmacy chain was essential. Hedgehogs basically cut to the chase, eliminating what isn't necessary for them, and focus on being the best in their area of expertise.
How can the budgeting process be used to maintain a focus on a company's Hedgehog. Activities and projects that have no relation and provide no support to what the company can do best simply should not be funded, while activities that support what the company can do best should be funded.
Page 1 of 6. How does the emphasis on people first fit with all the management teachings about corporate vision, purpose, mission and strategic thinking? How can the budgeting process be used to maintain a focus on a company's Hedgehog Concept? I know that the book may have contained too many symbolisms, but in reality, it has helped the readers to become more aware of reality. There were times when I would be thinking of how difficult things would be, as stated in the book.
In reality, my thoughts, emotions and intellectual capabilities are being challenged in a good way. If the book says that there is room and improvement for people in a company, then I believe that it is possible. Sometimes, I feel that I am hindered from showing my full potentials.
However, the book showed me how things and situations done in my life would influence my growth as an individual. I am brought to a conclusion that the things that happen to my life are just mere products of what would happen in the future.
If I would not do something about it, then these may result to more difficulties. If people are not blinded by the difficulties and challenges of life, then I believe that more is in store for them. Growth would not be hindered, and the people would become more inspired than ever to do the things that they love the most. Furthermore, people would become inspired to work harder, and improve their craft for the betterment of the company, and of themselves.
In addition to this, these people would also pass on their knowledge to those who might find these useful. Being of great help to people is something that is taken for granted. However, with a little inspiration, and a little push, then I believe that anything is possible. By emphatically laying out your own rules and track, excellence is achieved simply by following them. You place the reader in the middle of the square, protected by all sides, and methodically move them forward, defending doubts and objections as they arise.
Begin with a broad, conclusive hook. This will be the meta-theme of the paper. Example from a paper on The Great Gatsby: One sentence laying foundation for first body paragraph.
These are mini-theses for each point you will argue. Though Gatsby was a bootlegger, he was driven by hope and love, rather than the greed that motivated his status-obsessed guests. Restate the hook and thesis into a single transition sentence into the first paragraph. Some say the thesis should go at the bottom of the intro instead of the top, which I think is a huge mistake. The point of a paper is to make an assertion and then support it.
Normally you can use even less: Last sentence must transition to a general statement about human nature. It works for a paper of words just as much as it does for one of pages. Could you ask for anything better? Just like the tactics of the great generals, by laying out the square in advance with clear, orderly lines, you insulate yourself from the chaos of improvisation.
Each paragraph is given a singular purpose and its only duty is fulfillment. Like I said earlier, with this structure you place the reader in the middle of the square, protected by all sides, and methodically move them forward, defending doubts and objections as they arise.
